Letters Bingo for Kindergarten

Letter recognition is a foundation for reading. Kindergarten teachers use songs, tracing, and games — and bingo belongs in that toolkit because it is simple, social, and repeatable. When each square is a letter, students scan their cards for visual matches while hearing the letter name again and again.

Why bingo supports the alphabet

In a whole-group setting, bingo keeps eyes on print. You can align calls with your scope and sequence (fewer letters early in the year, full sets later). Hearing “S!” while searching for the shape of S strengthens the letter–sound–name connection, especially if you occasionally add a keyword (“S as in sun”).

Kindergarten learning goals

Focus areas usually include naming uppercase (and often lowercase) letters, distinguishing similar shapes (b/d, p/q), and beginning to connect letters to sounds. A letters bingo round is practice, not assessment — keep the tone light and celebratory.

Words Bingo: 24 uppercase letters as your list

Tips for the classroom

Warm up with the alphabet song or a quick letter chant before the first call.

Show the letter on a board when needed so all students connect sound and symbol.

Short rounds. Multiple short games beat one long session for five- and six-year-olds.

Celebrate everyone. Let different students win across rounds so confidence stays high.

Phonics connections

FAQ

Why stop at X in the example list? The sample gives 24 letters for a 5×5 with a free space; rotate Y and Z into the next game or trade a few letters for review of confusing pairs.

Is this too hard for the start of K? Start with 10–12 letters your class has explicitly taught, then expand the list as the year progresses.
